BWF World Junior Championships 2026: Tanvi Patri, Shaina Manimuthu to lead Indian squad at Cairo

On August 13, 2026, the Badminton Association of India (BAI) officially announced the 18-member squad for the BWF World Junior Championships 2026, taking place from October 5 to 17 in Cairo, Egypt. The Indian team carries the ambition to replicate last year's historic achievements — team bronze at the Suhandinata Cup and individual silver at the Eye Level Cups — but this time on foreign soil. Tanvi Patri and Shaina Manimuthu were named as the leaders of the women's team. Tanvi Patri recently claimed the Asian U17 championship at the 2026 Badminton Asia Junior Championships — her first continental title in junior career. Shaina Manimuthu holds a continental silver medal, while Dev Ruparelia — the men's side leader — is the India Junior International Grand Prix champion. According to BAI Secretary General Sanjay Mishra, the selection trials were held from September 18 to 21, followed by the World Junior Training Camp at the National Centre of Excellence in Guwahati from September 25 to October 2. BAI stated it deliberately waited for medal-winning international athletes to return before finalizing the squad. The Indian squad is balanced across five disciplines: four men's singles, four women's singles, two men's doubles pairs, two women's doubles pairs, and two mixed doubles pairs. Notably, Yogansh Singh (men's doubles and mixed doubles) and Aanya Bisht (women's doubles and mixed doubles) are multi-event athletes. Aanya Bisht was also a member of the women's doubles pair that won the 2026 team medal, retained for continuity. Regarding competition format, the 2026 World Junior Championships marks a significant change: the BWF Council approved experimental scoring systems for the 2026 junior circuit. The Suhandinata Cup (team event) will use a 3x55 relay scoring system, while the Eye Level Cups (individual events) adopt a 3x15 format. Both deviate from the standard 21-point best-of-three rally system used at senior level. In the team draw, India is seeded fifth and placed in Group D1 alongside Peru and Brazil. To reach the quarterfinals, the team must top the group stage and then win a playoff match against the Group D2 winner — where Indonesia is seeded ninth, along with Macau China and Senegal. India's fifth seed creates a narrow gap compared to Indonesia's ninth seed, but does not guarantee a safe path to the quarterfinals. The competition schedule is back-to-back with no rest day: team event runs October 5-10, followed immediately by individual events October 11-17. With this structure, multi-event athletes like Yogansh Singh and Aanya Bisht could face a grueling 13-day competition block if the team progresses deep in both events. India's participation in Cairo differs significantly from 2026, when the championships were held in Guwahati — the team's home ground. Last year's team bronze and individual silver set the foundation for expectations, but replicating results at a neutral venue raises questions about the sustainability of India's junior momentum. Sanjay Mishra expressed optimism in the official statement, emphasizing the team has "worked extremely hard" and has "good momentum."
